I know something about you that you possibly, perhaps probably, don’t know about yourself.
You’ve been programmed.
Believe me, there’s no escaping that truth. You’re a product of your environment, just as I am, just as we all are.
And here’s what I can categorically promise you about that environment; unless your results say otherwise, it’s programmed you very effectively for struggle, mediocrity and failure.
Feel free to disagree. If you’re enjoying financial certainty and the freedom that comes with it from the fruits of a highly profitable business, I’ll gladly stand corrected. But if you’re not, I’ll just point out the long standing statistics and indelible, undeniable, irrefutable evidence surrounding us.
Take a look at the results of the vast majority of business owners. We’re awash in “averageness”. I’m not convinced “averageness” is a word but I know the word “average” originated in an Arabic term meaning “damaged merchandise.”
How very fitting.
If you’re to live a far more rewarding and successful life, you need to unlearn. As Martin H. Fischer accurately observed, “It is not hard to learn more. What is hard is to unlearn when you discover yourself wrong”.
Take a look at your existing results. They’re speaking to you. Can you honestly say you’re getting it right?
I doubt it. Very few people are.
Your results aren’t the problem.
You ARE.
You’ve been programmed to think in a certain way, to act in a certain way, so you achieve to a certain level.
The great news is you CAN change it.
The great news is you can free yourself from the psychological shackles you’ve inherited. You can free yourself from the habitual ways of thinking that keep every day, well meaning, hard working business owners chained to unwanted results they work so desperately hard to change.
You CAN unlearn.
It’s easy to follow the well trodden path.
It’s easy to fit in and do what others do.
It’s easy to let life deteriorate to the lowest common denominator and make a living rather than making a life.
It’s easy to just settle – to get trapped by economic necessities and resign yourself to a life of existence rather than a life of substance.
Easy’s easy.
It’s also costly. Very costly.
Larry Niven said, “Half of wisdom is learning what to unlearn“. The other half is learning what needs to be learned so you can live as most people don’t live – because, like you and I, they’ve been programmed for “averageness”.
People don’t do well not because they lack talent, ability or potential. They don’t do well because they’re programmed to major in the minor things.
They have uphill ambitions but downhill habits.
This is why Jacqueline E. Purcell said: “You must unlearn what you have been programmed to believe since birth. That software no longer serves you if you want to live in a world where all things are possible”.
You’ve been taught to approach business in a certain way. A common way.
You’ve been fed truths about how you build a business, find customers, price and sell your services, structure your website and position yourself in the marketplace, all of which have brought about the results you’re getting today.
Now if those so-called “truths” are delivering on your entrepreneurial dream – giving you the financial income, wealth and freedom to live life as you’d choose to live if you didn’t have to concern yourself with how much money’s coming in to meet how money’s going out…major kudos to you.
But if your results are painting a different picture, this is your moment of truth – because here’s a truth you’d be nothing short of idiotic to deny;
Yesterday’s programming doesn’t cut it in today’s commercial world.
It’s a whole different ball game.
As Alvin Toffler accurately prophesied: “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn“.
