The “Inertia Club”

Posted · Add Comment

Inertia.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, inertia is “a tendency to do nothing or to remain unchanged”.

There’s lot of that going about. If there was such a thing as “The Inertia Club”, it’d be the most well-subscribed club in the world because the truth is, if you were to examine the lives of most people, they tend to do nothing and as a consequence, remain unchanged.

I’ll clarify the “do nothing” statement, because if it’s taken literally, the all-important point won’t land.

I’m not accusing the masses of being lazy buggers (although there’s a decent number of them who are). Clearly people in general, whether employed or self-employed, get out of bed in the morning, go to work, put a decent shift in and do other “stuff” in their lives.

This isn’t just about activity. A lot of people live extremely busy lives to just stand still (even though, as I’ll reveal shortly, such a state isn’t possible).

No, this is about “doing nothing” to change things for the better.

This is about “doing nothing” in regard to self-improvement and personal growth.

This is about growth avoidance – not living the “develop the owner not the business” principle that separates the “haves” from the “have-nots” in entrepreneurial life.

It’s no coincidence the vast majority of business owners are struggling. It’s not by “chance” that most just “get by”. It’s not “luck”, the “hand of God”, or the farcical incompetence of politicians that sees them plodding on from one year to the next stagnating in mediocrity, working harder and longer for less as the business slowly consumes them.

Less freedom.

More headaches.

More frustration.

Same income.

In a word...shite.

Since when was that ever part of the plan?

So what went wrong? Why do so many hard-working, well-intentioned, people with genuine aspiration fail to make the grade?

You know the answer…but I’m going to say it like it is regardless, because unless you’re acting into what you know – in others words, you actively and purposefully invest in your self-improvement – you’ve just grasped the concept intellectually…

…and nothing changes from that.

The performance gap in life is the difference between what we know and what we do.

So here’s why it all goes “tits up” for the majority; they do not understand the cause and effect relationship between their level of consciousness and their results.

Your results, in every aspect of life, are a direct consequence of the level of consciousness you’re expressing in that part of life. It determines everything – how you think, how you feel, how you act.

Gotta weight problem? The sugar-filled diet is NOT the problem – YOU are. Your current level of consciousness is sponsoring the habitual behaviours that generate your overt rotundness.

Gotta struggling business? Guess what? Your level of consciousness is showing up on your top and bottom line.

It can’t be any other way. This a lawful process. There are no exceptions and there is no “luck” (that’s why it’s said “you make your own”). Understand this: life unfolds, perfectly, through the undeviating expression of natural laws. This one is cause and effect.

All results have ancestry. They don’t lie. They can’t lie. As a highly conscious man pointed out over 2000 years ago:

“By their fruits you will know them”.

Still, despite enlightened folk like JC, Laozi, Buddha and a myriad of other teachers speaking into this great truth since time immemorial, the message remains largely unheard.

And that’s why there’s no shortage of numbers at “Inertia Club”.

Here’s the interesting thing about inertia; it doesn’t exist. It’s not possible to remain “unchanged”. You’re either changing…or you’re being changed. There is no in-between state of just “existing” in nature. It might appear, through the limitations of our sight, that something, or someone, stays as they are, but the truth is rarely in the appearance of things.

Everything is in a constant state of movement.

Nothing is as it was.

Nothing remains as is.

You are either growing or you’re diminishing.

You are either appreciating or depreciating.

You are either creating or disintegrating.

And, as Maslow put it, you’re either stepping forward into growth, or backwards into safety.

Standing still is not an option. It’s a natural, lawful, inescapable, undeviating process and principle of life. If you’re not growing, you’re heading in the opposite direction – period – because life unfolds relentlessly and change is constant, whether you like it, embrace it, drive it…or not.

The “play-it-safe”, standing still, treading water reality of “Inertia Club” is nothing more than a very convincing illusion. If you’re in it – you’re going backwards.

In physics, inertia is described as “a property of matter by which it continues in its existing state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line, unless that state is changed by an external force”.

I’m that external force in your life – do you have what it takes to make those entrepreneurial aspirations a reality?
