It’s far better to change than to “be” changed

In my line of work, you get to notice things most people don’t.

Like what’s going on inside. You know, all the limiting beliefs, self-sabotage and self-limiting bullshit we all feed ourselves from time to time.

You get a strong feel for the “prevailing wind” in the mindset of the masses too. “Mass consciousness” is the pandemic psychological affliction commonly referred to as “following the crowd”. Nobody thinks they suffer from it and yet nearly all do.

And do you know what’s regularly top of the agenda in mass consciousness?

Evidenced by how people behave. The multitude who don’t think, but think-they-think do exactly what they did back in the financial crises of 2008-12 – nothing. They freeze, like proverbial rabbits in headlights, consumed by a fear-based poverty consciousness.

They don’t make decisions. They don’t invest in growth. And they don’t put money where their potential is…at a time when it’s most important of all to do it.

They’re utterly paralysed by fear, worry and anxiety.

That’s how it is when you live from the outside in rather than the inside out. That’s how it is when your mindset’s engineered to always be at the whims of external events. That’s how it is when you allow whatever’s going on in the outside world to dictate whatever’s going on in your internal world. That’s how it is when you allow the world to determine how you think, what you do and how you do it. That’s how it is when you live as if reverse-engineered, living at the effect end of the cause-and-effect equation.

Billions live this way. They don’t see it that way of course. Ignorance is blindness. They’ll tell you they “know their own minds”. That’s simply not true. They hardly know themselves at all. They’ll also tell you they “can think for themselves”. Now that is true, they can think – but it doesn’t mean they do. Or will. No, it’s soooo much easier to marinate in the “follow the herd” mentality. No one has to think at all then. That’s why following the herd is so attractive to so many people.

These aren’t people who choose change on their own terms. They’re people who get changed. They’re being “done to” by the world. And there’s always someone, or something, to blame for their problems.

Successful people don’t behave this way. They do the opposite. They’re successful because they don’t allow the external world to determine how they think, feel and act into life. They don’t abscond responsibility in the creative process. They know change is constant and unavoidable and so, they drive change on their own terms.

They know it’s far better to change than to be changed.

Those who study successful people (it always amazes me how very few people are willing to do that), will tell you successful people NEVER stop investing in growth. In uncertain times, when the masses bury their heads in the sand, bail out, batten down the hatches, sit on their cash and freeze in the onset of mass-driven fear, successful people profit by ramping up their investments and growth strategies.

Like a cancer often remains undetected until it’s done its worst, it’s easy to get caught up in mass consciousness without knowing – until the life you dreamt of passed you by. Symptoms of following the herd aren’t easily identified if you’re not looking for them. Again – ignorance is blinding. The litmus test comes from evaluating your own behaviour.

Check in with yourself.

  • When was the last time you made a significant investment in improving yourself?
  • When did you last invest in developing the owner not the business?
  • When was the last time you made an investment – be it in time, money or commitment – that scared and excited you in the same proportion?

And do you know what’s most ironic about all of this? Never more than now has it been so important to take control of your own destiny. If you think you’ve already taken control of your own destiny because you “own a business”, you’re a fool. Unless your business is generating a lot more income than you can spend, unless you’ve got financial certainty and lifestyle freedom and you can take a year off from your business and it’ll only grow to be more profitable when you’re away…you don’t own a business – you own a job.

And let’s not beat around the bush – what you’re doing isn’t working – not if you’re not getting the results you’d like to be getting – not if you want the better things in life – and the only reason it’s like that is because you’re following the herd more than you care to admit.

Understand this: whatever success looks like for you, whatever the “dream” is – if it amounts to more than just working harder and harder for longer and longer, year in, year out to just “get by” and “make a “living”, make no mistake – following the herd will kill your dream – every time.

You don’t need 20:20 vision to find overwhelming evidence to support the claim…the statistics prove it…and they’ve not changed since first recorded decades ago.

If you’re to be a success, you’ve got to act like it now. Wishing for it won’t do it for you. As Napoleon Hill pointed out in “Think and Grow Rich”, “Riches do not respond to wishes. They respond only to definite plans, backed by definite desires, through constant persistence”.

And as Eric Hoffer put it so perfectly:

“In a world of change, the learners shall inherit the earth, while the learned shall find themselves perfectly suited for a world that no longer exists”.

Wealth is a choice. As is poverty, frustration, struggle and the feast-to-famine rollercoaster most business owners endure until ultimate failure.

The question for you is: which side of the equation do your current choices reveal you’re showing up on?

Life doesn’t give you what you want, it gives you who you are.

You are always at choice. And if following the crowd is how you choose to live your life – do nothing. To remain in the grips of the mass consciousness that suppresses your potential, cripples your business and denies you wealth and freedom – do nothing. But if that’s not who you are…

…and you’re committed to growing your business, increasing your personal wealth, and discovering how to bring greater financial certainty and freedom into your life…
